Outline of Research | |||
Visual impairment caused by ageing and various ocular diseases is not a fatal condition, but it significantly affects quality of life. Our laboratory is engaged in basic research on the prevention and treatment of ocular diseases. For example, some natural materials from food and plant have diverse physiological activities and are expected to be applied as preventive or therapeutic agents for ocular diseases such as cataract and diabetic retinopathy, which are leading causes of acquired blindness in the world. We investigate the efficacy of various natural materials against ocular diseases in animal models of cataract and retinopathy, as well as in cell culture systems. In addition, we are developing structure-activity relationship studies to comprehensively investigate the bioactivity of new compounds based on flavonoid and vitamin structures synthesised in our organic system laboratory, and to clarify the structural properties that lead to the prevention of ocular diseases or the enhancement of therapeutic effects.
