Outline of Research
Because Japan is meeting a super-aging society, the number of the people affected by retinal degenerative diseases, such as glaucoma, is increasing. Therefore, overcoming retinal degenerative diseases is an urgent task. In addition, the medication for the diseases of the central nervous system disorders is not enough to satisfy the public need.

Our main research field is the neuronal pharmacology, especially intended for the retina, using wide range of tequniques from classical pharmacology using whole animals to molecular biology. Our ongoing projects are as follows;

1) Analysis of the mechanisms of retinal neuronal cell death caused by glaucoma and retinitis pigmentosa and searching the neuroprotective agents for these retinal degenerative diseases, as a model of neurodegenerative diseases.

2) Analysis of the mechanisms of regulation of retinal circulation, as a model of the blood vessels in the central nervous system.
